Clinton Mathias, Ph.D.

Clinton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and has an affiliate appointment in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Connecticut. Clinton obtained his B.Sc. in Microbiology and Biochemistry from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, India, followed by a M.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Mumbai. Subsequently, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where he examined the role of natural killer cells in allergic asthma along with Hector Aguila and Roger Thrall. He then moved to Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School for a post-doctoral fellowship, where he studied the role of IgE antibodies and mast cells in allergic diseases under the mentorship of Hans Oettgen.

Clinton has always been passionate about teaching and involving students in research. As such, for his first faculty appointment, he moved to a liberal arts institution, Western New England University, where he was a founding faculty member of the pharmacy program and established his laboratory on mast cells and allergic diseases. Clinton is an active proponent of the importance of immunology education and literacy both within academia and at the community level. He has served as a member of the American Association of Immunologists’ (AAI) Education Committee and the Director of the AAI High School Teachers Summer Research program. He frequently involves undergraduate students in his research and has participated in the mentorship of high school teachers.

In addition to his research activities, Clinton is actively involved in teaching courses such as Immunology, Pathophysiology of Metabolic Diseases, and Advances in Immunological Research. As an active citizen of the community, Clinton gave several interviews for local television networks during the COVID-19 pandemic on the importance of protective measures and vaccination. His hobbies include reading science fiction and mystery novels, writing, cooking, and hiking.
